Those who have difficulty hearing can't fully appreciate movies and television shows if it weren't for superb subtitles. Fortunately, there has never been a period in cinema or television history when subtitles were more freely available. Whether it's through readily available closed captions on live television or the one pre-edited on streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and others, good subtitles are typically not difficult to get by.

About OpenSubtitles

OpenSubtitles are the life-saver for those who are deaf and have problems with hearing or foreign when it comes to watching movies and videos.

However, some of you may already be aware that subtitles are not necessarily "good." In fact, they can be outright wrong at times. I'm very sure I've seen a lot of movies and shows where the subtitle is completely incorrect. The performer says one thing, while the subtitle says a completely different thing.

Not only are there an abundance of little issues with subtitles and closed captions but it's also insufferable when a subtitle is just incorrect. It is no longer appropriate to ask the deaf and hearing-impaired people to watch what is effectively a separate movie or program than the rest of us in the year 2022.

As a result, locating the finest subtitle download source is critical. Maybe you were unaware that subtitle sites existed until now. There are quite a few of them, and they are not all made equal. Naturally, some provide more subtitles than others. Some offer a wider range of languages than others. Others have more accurate translations and higher-quality subtitles. So, how can you be certain that you'll be able to locate the top subtitle website?

Even if you aren't deaf, subtitles may make a big difference when it comes to watching movies and TV shows. There are times when you don't exactly understand what was stated... You can read along with a subtitle, so you don't have to replay it again. Perhaps you can't understand a thick accent as well. When you're not sure what's being stated, a subtitle makes life easier.

The most essential reason for hearing-impaired persons to utilize subtitles is when there is no audio available in their language. As it were, foreign films. These are frequently accompanied by English subtitles. However, this leaves out a large portion of the population, who either do not speak English or who aren't that proficient with the language to read it as fast as the subtitles. Subtitle websites, at least the excellent ones will be the ones who share different scripts in various languages so that everyone, not just those who speak the correct language, may completely enjoy entertainment.

As enthusiastic as I am about reviewing the top free and paid movie and TV streaming sites, I am as enthusiastic about reviewing you the best subtitles providers out there. There's a lot that goes into creating an excellent subtitle and a lot of effort should be put into ensuring that you have access to them. That's why today I would like to recommend you OpenSubtitles which is one of the highest standard subtitle sources on the Internet that I used.

Design

As much as I praise OpenSubtitles in the introduction above, I can’t blindly do the same thing when talking about its design.

The first thing that struck me about OpenSubtitles was its little size. I'm referring to the text. It is incredibly tiny and difficult to read. Overall, the site is arranged in such a way that it appears as if you have zoomed out your browser. It's merely a defect in the design. You'll be welcomed by a white and lime green motif with blue hyperlinks as its homepage.

At the very top of the website, there are some connections to related sites such as Classic Movies, BRAVE, English Subtitles, and Release Log. Below it is a site menu bar, which is somewhat minimal in comparison to other sites. You will see some of the main functions such as Search, Upload, Request,... are in the drop-down menus here.

The search bar is straightforward, but it gets the job done. Simply type in the title of the movie or show you want to watch, choose your language from the menu to the right, and you're ready to go. You'll have to look carefully to find it, but there are also advanced search and Applet search choices.

User Experience

OpenSubtitles includes a number of features that make it one of the most well-organized and accurate subtitles websites available. To begin with, this site is massive, with more than 6 million subtitles (at the time of this review). The website Opensubtitles.com is quite responsive and fast.

One of the things that many people complain about is how many ads, pop-ups and commercials are there on the site. I mean, massive. I always use AdBlock and donate them later rather than browsing with ads because this is very time-consuming and risky. The site also contains a forum, which greatly enhances the community element of the site. Users can talk about movies, translations, requests, ranking the subtitles, and so on. You will get to meet others who share your enthusiasm for translation and subtitling.

A blog is also available. It isn't updated as regularly as one might wish, but the articles are informative and on the subject, covering topics like artificial intelligence subtitling, the Oscars, job prospects, and so on. There are several excellent articles in this collection.

One of my favourite features is its filters and sort. You can filter subtitles posted by language, date uploaded,… however, to get to the filter, you have to click on “all subtitles” at the bottom of the page where the page numbering is, which is not easy to spot at first.

Experience on different devices

I find it is better to browse this site on a laptop or PC because you can use AdBlock easily. However, on mobile, you can’t. This sucks because the ads will be showering every time you click on something. The text and the interface are tiny as well because of their original design. I’m not saying that it is completely useless on the phone but this can be the site’s next improvement.

Suggestions and conclusions

While OpenSubtitles is a great website with many subtitles and the accuracy is on point, it also has many drawbacks such as too many ads and a tiny UX/UI. I think these 2 areas are where they should focus on next otherwise the site will be down soon as people find it is too annoying.
