English-subtitles

English-subtitles and captions are the most helpful tools for the deaf and hearing-impaired when watching movies or video material nowadays. Because they can't hear anything, they can't grasp what's going on or what the performer is saying. Fortunately, in today's world, people are concerned about the quality of all aspects of life including entertainment and strive for equality in society. As a result, English-subtitles and captions are contentious features that every movie streaming site or service must supply to subscribers. Even free streaming services, not to mention large firms like Hulu and Netflix, readily add English-subtitles in their free services.

However, just as with many other aspects of life, some services are better than others; this is also true with English-subtitles and closed captions. If you're a movie buff, you've probably observed that a lot of movies and websites have incorrect English-subtitles or incorrect timing, which is inconvenient. This will generate several issues, the most serious of which is that we will be unable to comprehend the information, which is discriminatory to the deaf and hearing-impaired. Of course, it would be impolite and insensitive to urge people to stay away from watching certain content just because English-subtitles are unavailable.

But what if it's you or someone you know who's in this situation? What if they are your granny and grandpa? If that occurred to me, I'd feel terrible if I wouldn't be able to prevent it. That is why I learned how English-subtitles and captions are created. I quickly understood that this isn't just a language issue; making English-subtitles requires knowledge of two languages. It's a technical issue as well. To subtitle several foreign films, you don't need to know many languages; most subtitler freelancers or volunteers can perform the work since they know where to get all of the translated materials. All they have to do now is utilize timing software and insert the English-subtitles once they have the translations. That is all there is to it.

So you can see why subtitle websites are so crucial to us; there are a lot of them on the internet, but their quality isn't guaranteed. Some websites update more frequently than others, while some provide a wider range of languages and film genres. Some English-subtitles files might have better timing than others, and the list is endless. So, for the time being, how can you tell which one is the high-quality one?

No need to Google all of this burden now because I am about to tell you in this post. The website I am referring to is English-subtitle. This is one of the many locations where I look for English-subtitles. So, how about we have a look?

The ads

There is a famous saying that when the service is free, you are the product. This is completely true when it comes to English-subtitles.org. Ads are everywhere on the site and they are all nonsense and look like a scam. Every time you click on something, even just the background, nothing specifically, a new window or tab will open automatically. This is so annoying but hey ho, you are using this service for free, the site needs some source of income to pay for itself right?

Design

Right, set the ads complaints aside, let’s talk about the design of the website. It is in a dark theme which is nice to the eye and the headline is white. Right next to its logo at the top of the page is the search bar where you can enter the name of the movies you want to get the subtitles for. Here you can upload your own subtitles if you want to contribute to the community by clicking on the “Add Subtitles” button to the right of the search. 

Right below it is the above search bar is the menu bar. This includes 3 main links to the inner pages including Movies subtitles, TV shows subtitles and English subtitles. English subtitles also feature some of the subtitles of the on-trend movies available to download. When I last take a look at it, they were featuring The Blacklist, The Flash, Batwoman, American Gods, Cobra Kai. You can get access to the subtitle page of these movies’ subtitles with just one click (and some ads…).

Scrolling down, you will find there and many latest English-subtitles are listed. Each of the items in the list has a small thumbnail of the movie, a clickable download symbol, the name of the file, the technical details of the file, a little flag that symbolizes the language of the subtitle file and finally, the date and time uploaded. The upload rate is quite consistent, the latest movie last time I checked for this review is Servant Season 3 Episode 1 and it was uploaded at 05:50 on the same day. To the right of the mentioned list is a small white table dedicated to English-subtitles of about 9 movies.  

Each subtitle inner page

Whenever you click on a subtitle file name, the site will take you to its inner page dedicated to this specific file. You will have a chance to get to know more about this file. There is a rating score (I would assume that it is from IMDb), Runtime, Genres, Year of release and Starring. Now here is one of the features of English-subtitles that I like which is it will show you all of the English-subtitles of the TV series you are looking at when you click on one of the titles. This is very time-saving for people who have to put English-subtitles for the whole series all at once. 

Mobile version 

To be frank with you, the mobile version of English-subtitles is far worse than its website version. It lacks all of the menu bar as well as the navigation bar. All it has when you get access to its website on your phone is some ads and a list of the latest uploaded subtitles as well as a search bar. This is hard enough to search, let alone it doesn’t have any thumbnails but just text!

 Suggestions and conclusions

Although English-subtitles claims that they were established in 2015, I think it has a lot to improve such as adding sort and filter so it is easier for users to browse content or a statistics table where people can have a grasp of how many English-subtitles are available on the site. Moreover, the site contains too many unrelated ads. All in all, I find this site quite messy and are just created for the sake of earning money through ads.
